Are smoothies good for your health?
Before diving into finding how to make a fruit smoothie, let’s dive into why. Smoothies can be an incredibly nutritious part of your diet. As with our juice recipes, we think it’s better to eat both fruits and vegetables where possible. But not always possible! Smoothies make it easy to combine all the nutrients of healthy foods into one healthy drink – great when you’re on the go or don’t have time.
And honestly, the smoothies are unbelievably delicious! We believe that a perfect sweet smoothie that will put a smile on your face also nourishes your soul and will be so much better for your health.
Which blender is best for making smoothies?
Blenders have become so advanced in the last few years, that it’s hard to pick a blender that can’t make a great smoothie! If you’re shopping for a blender, here are three we recommend for your everyday smoothie:
BEST PERFECT: Cuisinart Immersion/Stick Blender – Don’t let its small size fool you, this tiny hand blender is packed with power and will easily make your daily smoothie! Would be perfect if you are limited on counter space.
MEDIUM: Ninja Professional Blender – an incredibly powerful blender for creating a dreamy creamy smoothie. This is the blender we’ve utilized in our fully tested kitchen for years, and it is a great entry-level blender that also packs a punch.
SPLURGE: Vitamix Professional Blender – Vitamix is the leader when it comes to blenders, and it’s something we use every day in the kitchen. It comes with a hefty price tag (think: more than paying for your car), so if you’re just making a regular smoothie, there’s no need to spend. But if you cook a lot or make a lot of smoothies or mixed drinks, you might want to start saving your pennies for a Vitamix. It’s a dream device to use!
Healthy smoothie ingredients
Fresh or frozen fruit: You can use a combination of fresh and frozen fruit in your smoothies. Frozen fruit makes smoothies thick and creamy. I like to freeze overripe bananas, peel them, and cut them into smaller pieces, so they’re always ready to add to smoothies. Ice dilutes the flavor of the smoothie, so use frozen fruit instead.
Vegetables: Vegetables are a source of nutrients and making them your morning smoothie is a great way to start your day healthily. Spinach, kale, and other greens combine well in smoothies. You can add frozen cauliflower to smoothies and not even taste it. Or try adding carrots to your morning smoothie for a healthy sweetness.
Avocado: Have you ever tried avocado smoothie? Avocados add healthy fats to smoothies, it makes for a smooth paste and you don’t get the taste of avocados (as long as you don’t add too much).
Oatmeal: Adding aged oats is an easy way to take any smoothie and turn it into a breakfast smoothie. You can add raw oats along with the rest of your smoothie ingredients and blend until smooth.
Greek Yogurt: Greek yogurt is a great way to add protein to your smoothie. Yogurt also turns smoothies into ice cream.
Nut Butters: I like to add a scoop of almond butter or peanut butter to my smoothies. The nut butter provides healthy fats and proteins so you don’t go hungry again right away.
Seeds: Flax seeds, chia seeds, and hemp seeds can all add fiber and nutrition to your smoothie.
Liquid: You need to add liquid ingredients to the smoothie to help it blend. There are many options, from plain water to coconut water, milk, almond milk or other nut milk, coconut milk, oat milk, and juice. I try not to use juice as it can add too much sugar to the smoothie, especially if you are also adding fruit.
Flavor Enhancer: A little cinnamon or a few drops of vanilla extract can enhance the flavor of a smoothie!
Smoothies are perfect for quick breakfasts and healthy snacks because they’re quick and easy to make! You simply put all the smoothie ingredients in your blender and blend until smooth. A high-powered blender, such as the Vitamix, isn’t necessary, but if you’re going to make regular smoothies, I think it’s a worthy investment.
If your mornings are too busy, you can prepare smoothies in advance by making frozen smoothie packs. For meal prep smoothies:
Gather individual smoothie servings in mason jars or zip-top bags.
Put the ingredients in a jar (or bag), starting with the fruit. Use frozen fruit or else it may be difficult to remove from the jar later.
Do not add any liquid to the flask; you will add liquid just before mixing.
Store smoothie packets in your freezer until you’re ready to use them.
When ready to blend, pour the frozen smoothie pack into your blender. Pour your blending liquid into the jar and shake to remove any final particles, etc., then pour into your blender.
Note
I prefer to use frozen fruit in my smoothies because it’s convenient and gives my smoothies a nice thick texture, but you can use regular fruit instead. If not using frozen fruit I might recommend adding a few pieces of ice before blending.
You can prefer to add in any extras you wish to any of those smoothies. You don’t have to use hemp hearts in your smoothie just because that is what I used.
These Healthy Smoothie Recipes are all super easy to form and therefore the perfect thanks for starting your day!
